Our Initiatives

When individuals are released from incarceration, many face significant challenges when looking for housing, employment, positive connections and supportive services in the community. This leads to a population that is vulnerable to failure and return to incarceration.

Our Mission

iTAV It Takes a Village Inc is a non-profit organization that prioritizes housing and appropriate support services to the justice involved population. The main goal of the organization is to provide suitable housing and a ‘safe haven’ simultaneously while this targeted demographic transition from the prison back into the community.

The Selection Process

iTav collaborates with the State Prisons and County Jails through a referral process. To apply for the program, inmates will submit an application to iTAV 3 to 6 months prior to parole hearing or release. Additionally, applicant must be recommended by pre- release coordinators.   The application will be reviewed by iTAV staff who will then contact the inmate for an interview.  During the interview, our program is explained and an assessment will be conducted to determine eligibility. Selection will be at the discretion of iTAV.

Our Core Services

Housing- Focused Case Management

Housing- focused Case Management is one of the core services we provide at iTAV. This service is essential to helping our residents achieve and maintain stable and permanent housing.

Employment
Services

Employment Services are dedicated to improving employment opportunities with our residents at iTAV. Employment services provide residents with training on key elements of a job search such as: completing an employment application, creating resumes, finding job leads, networking and preparing for interviews. Additionally, residents will learn skills on how to promote personal growth and professional advancement.

Mental Health
Services

Here at iTAV we want to ensure mind, body and spirit are set up for success, therefore, Mental Health Services are mandatory for our residents.  When mental health is at its strongest our residents can make better choices and help to ensure that past experiences do not dictate the future.

A Young Man Writing

DID YOU KNOW?

According to Tennessee Department of Corrections, the Volunteer State has about 24,000 people incarcerated.  The sad fact is two-thirds will likely be rearrested within three years of release. The high volume of recidivism, have in large measures, created an explosion in the Tennessee Prison population. For the communities to which most former prisoners return (communities which are often impoverished and disenfranchised neighborhoods with few social supports and persistently high crime rates), the release of ex-offenders represents a variety of challenges.

So what can be done to help people who are released from prison keep from being rearrested? With no place to live, no job, and no money, returnees often find themselves facing the same pressures and temptations that landed them in prison in the first place.

iTAV have accepted the challenge of assisting justice involved individuals in identifying housing, finding and keeping employment, and receiving supportive services, which are three key elements of successful re-entry back into our communities.  iTAV isn’t a panacea, however it is a good place to start.
